Founded by president Sarmiento in 1875, it holds an important variety of native and exotic wildlife in pavilions that reproduce the natural habitat of each specie. Once more, we owe the design to the French architect Carlos Thays. It covers an area of 18 hectares. (approximately 40 acres).
This zoo offers an exhibition apart when we look at the animal "dwellings". For example. The gothic pavilions for the bears, the French palace with its slate roof, which holds the lions, or the huge, almost a thousand square metres reproduction of an Indian temple that houses the elephants.
We recommend a tour that willinclude the snake collection, the bears, the lion's pit, other cats, elephants, sea lions, camels and Aldabra turtles, hippopotami, giraffes, monkeys, not to forget the aquarium and the rainforest area, which reproduces the habitat of the plants and animals that live in the subtropical forest.
