IGUAZU CIRCUITS
WILDERNESS ADVENTURES
The rainforest in the Iguazu National Park gives many options for those who enjoy adventure tourism. Just a few meters from the research center is the Macuco Trail, a 3 km long footpath through the thick forest, with varying degrees of difficulty. This walk can be done privately and takes two hours, bringing the traveller to the Arrechea Falls.
Another supplier offers a more daring option: in a 4WD vehicle, the tourist travels an 8 km track in the forest, arriving at the bank of the lower river. There, a semi-rigid rubber boat will be waiting him, with powerful outboard motors, to take them upriver.
Careening around and through the rapids, they arrive at the foot of the falls. There, the tourist goes through an Iguazu Falls "baptism ceremony". This ritual takes the prow of the boat so close to the fall that it almost enters the curtain of falling water.
The visitor has another option: boarding a rubber rowing boat in the upper Iguazu river will give him or her the chance to have a close-up view of the flora and fauna making up this delta. With a little luck, they may even glimpse turtles and yacaré alligators sunning on the shore.
The ecological train (from Central Station) has this schedule:first train leaves at 8 p.m.; second train leaves at 10.15 p.m. Passengers must be ready at least 45 minutes earlier. It is worthwhile to take a rain cape, a flashlight and a repellent.
THE GREAT ADVENTURE OF THE IGUAZU JUNGLE EXPLORER
Radiant sunshine and a longing to get into the luxuriant Misiones rainforest will attract the traveller once again into the very heart of the Iguazu National Park. But this time he will be taken to join in the adventure tourism activities of Iguazu Jungle Explorer.
4WD through the forest
An off-road means of transport takes the visitors 8 km along the Yacaratiá Trail through the subtropical Paranarainforest, to admire the flora and fauna: palm trees, palo santo, araucarias, fig-trees, and hundreds of bromelias, orchids and miltoneas. The rain will probably have converted the path into a marsh of red mud, and the first dose of adrenalin comes when the driver lets in the four-wheel drive to get through the circuit.
Unforgettable boat trip
Reaching the river, the traveller boards a semi-rigid rubber boat to sail at full speed into the heart of its lower part. The trip is 6 km in all, but the best comes at the end when the boat is tossed across the rapids for the last 2 km. There is a moment to take photos before heading at full speed to the Devil's Throat Canyon. The camera is put in a plastic bag provided by the company, and the visitor settles back to marvel at the astounding waterfall that from this perspective seems even larger than expected.
Luxury shower
Baptism in the cool, foaming waters of the Iguazu is a once in your life experience.
The adventurous soul has to get as close as possible to the falls, feeling the impressive vibrating roar of the water crashing just a few meters away, getting soaked to the skin, and passing through the rainbows scattered through the mouths of the falls is a unique sensation that has to be felt to be understood. The paths then lead to the Cataratas Station where the ecological train goes to the point where the walkway to the Devil's Throat starts. From that point one leaves on a boat trip to get close up to the intimacy of the natural environment of the Upper Iguazu River. The trip takes one hour, and departs from an office at Cataratas Station
