MUSEUMS IN HUMAHUACA
The Municipal Museum of Archaeology
It has a collection of pre-Hispanic pottery pieces. We can especially mention the ones pertaining to the Humahuaca culture, which developed in the area of the same name and its surroundings. Spear points, earthenware pots, ceramics pieces and every day utensils belonged to the Omaguacas, who were later under the domination of the Inca Empire and, conquered by the Spaniards, populated this area. It holds many artefacts that show the super positioning and influences many of these cultures had on the local population .

The 200 year old outpost of Hornillos, "Posta de los Hornillos" was restored by the Bunge & Born Foundation in 1979 and is today a museum. Its installations recreate the distinctive dwelling space of past centuries with great detail. Everything is as it was back then: the leafy yapán tree (Acacia visco) at the entrance, the welcoming house with adobe brick walls and mud covered roof, the old churqui (Acacia caven) and the time-honoured oven.
The mansion was constructed for the family Alvarez Prado. It was an obligatory outpost on the road that connected "Alto Perú", High Peru as Bolivia was called in those times, with the Viceroyalty of Río de la Plata. It later was used as the general headquarters of the vanguard of the Independence army.
Here general Belgrano stayed for a resting period after the victories at Tucumán and Salta, and it became the scene of various battles.
It has 13 rooms with furniture from the XVIII and XIX century, guns and ethnographic pieces as well as historical documents.
