PLACES TO VISIT

BELGRANO MAIN SQUARE
The main square of the city is located at the intersection of Sarmiento, San Martín, Gorriti and Belgrano. It still occupies the same place as in 1593 at the foundation of the city and the laying out of the city centre.

However its aspect has changed over time, with the midst of the XIX century seeing the most radical change. At that time it stopped being just an empty space in the centre to become a park like square with double rows of white magnolias and orange trees bordering it.

It is a lovely green space full of people, both local and visitors strolling around. If you follow any of the diagonal paths that cross through areas with flowery and shady trees you will eventually reach the equestrian monument to General Belgrano, "Monumento Ecuestre del General Manuel Belgrano", holding the National Argentinean Flag in his right hand.

GOVERNMENT HOUSE OR PALACE and THE NATIONAL FLAG HALL
This construction was commissioned at the turn of the XX century, and was inaugurated in 1920. . It is a public building with overtones of the French palaces of the XVIII century, with its symmetrical façade, its great central volume and two lesser one at either side.

Its threes floors reflect the French influence in its imitation of Paris stonemasonry, in its details and the slate garret on the third floor. Access is through a great hall with a three part staircase, enveloped by the offices that surround the central Patio de Magnolias.

The main hall, called the National Flag Hall is situated on the last floor and is the main reception hall. Its decoration includes rich gilded details superimposed on white backgrounds and big French windows. Here is kept the National Flag that General Belgrano donated to the Town Council of on May 25th, 1812 and the National Coat of Arms that Belgrano commissioned to be painted for one of the schools in the town.

The Government Palace is to be found on the Plaza Belgrano.

CATHEDRAL CHURCH
The Cathedral of San Salvador de Jujuy is in the same place as the Main Church was in 1611. Its neoclassical style facade has been conserved as it was then excepting for the modification of the central tower with its belfry over the main gate. Some modifications were made here before it was totally reconstructed in 1765, after it was destroyed in an earthquake at the end of the XVII century.

The modifications carried out in 1906 and 1910 changed the outside of the monument giving it an Italian style look. The facade now shows double freestanding columns Corinthian style, which is crowned by a banister that encircles the whole church. On to, there is a sole tower, just above and aligned with the main gate, and which is divided into two parts, a lower blocked up one and open with the belfry the second. A small cupola gives the finishing touch to the church.

The architect was Alonso de la Plaza. It keeps objects of notable antiquity and value, together with the pulpit carved out of Nandubay hardwood, laminated in gold and in the Spanish baroque style. This pullpit is considered one of the masterpieces of this genre in the Spanish Americas.

There is also a beautiful confessionary in Hispanic style and an articulated wood and plaster statue of Christ Taken down from the Cross, attributed to the great Spanish sculptor Martínez Montañés, one of the best in existence in the whole country. The monstrance is made out of silver and gold with encrusted emeralds, a work exquisitely detailed. There are also kept the other confessionaries of the era, all beautifully conserved.

Inside the church, modifications have been made by the instalments done during the XX century, especially on the ceiling, which covers the wood structure of the roof. Against the southern wall there is a small chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario de Río Blanco y Paypata, declared Patron Captain of the Northern Armies by General Belgrano. There is also a collection of paintings by members of the Cuzco School.

This church was made a Cathedral in 1935, when Jujuy became a bishopric diocese. On May 16th 1931 it was elevated to the category or National Historic Monument.

Entrance is through Belgrano and Sarmiento Sts. (Facing the Plaza Belgrano).

THE TOWN HALL AND THE POLICE HISTORY MUSEUM.
The town hall is located facing the General Belgrano Square, close to the Government House and the Cathedral.
Its structure keeps the colonial style galleries and half arches. It today hosts the Provincial Police and the Police History Museum, which displays guns and other arms as well as uniforms and other interesting objects.

This building from the XIX century has been named a National Historic Monument. It has been rebuilt after its destruction by an earthquake in 1863.

It is shaped like an "L", with one-metre thick adobe walls. It has three courtyards or patios, the smallest, might have been the living quarters. The facade ends in a gallery with 19 half arches, which rests on columns and pillars in the Tuscan style.

The gallery shows different stages of construction: the two oldest parts are the central one, with five arches on pillars, and the right one with seven arches on the top of thick columns. The most modern part, built after 1872, also with seven arches has leaner pillars. On the grand facade, 65 m wide, the central tower stands out with its merlon shaped battlements.

The historians of Jujuy say that from the balcony of the original Town Hall, on May 25th, 1812, the General Manuel Belgrano showed the people the flag that he had created and which was later blessed by the Canónigo Gorriti in the atrium of the Cathedral.

San Martín St, facing the Plaza Belgrano. Visiting Hours: Every day of the week, between 08:00 AM and noon and from 4:00 PM till 8:00 PM.
