REYES
Down the Nº 9 National Route, 8 km north of San Salvador de Jujuy the traveller will find the first town in the surrounding countryside: Kings or "Reyes", a place which has become a weekend retreat and getaway for many of its visitors. A place where people go to recharge energies and enjoy the varied vegetation of the surrounding valleys.
The many old summer houses there found, show how long this small town has been used as a vacation spot. Some of the houses have front-end porches, where you can get the best views over the beautiful countryside.
If you continue past the town on the Nº 4 Provincial Route, following the Río Reyes River, which here runs through a broad causeway filled with stones, you will reach the place where it turns into a gravel road 17 km from the town. There are no more houses, and the road climbs up for another 3 km until you reach a fabulous lookout point over the Reyes Gorge.
Just a few km further on, at 1800 m.a.s.l. the traveller may think he or she has arrived at Paradise. It is the Termas de Reyes Hot Springs, which lies in a bend where the Reyes River zigzags. This is the main resort in the chocolate box Reyes Gorge, which here is slightly 2 km across, contained with tree covered cliff walls.
In the Termas de Reyes you will find a hotel and some public baths. A place to enjoy its therapeutic medicinal properties and benefit from these mineral water hot springs, which curative properties have been described as far back as in the XVI century.
The alkaline hot spring water contains sulphates, sodium, calcium and bicarbonate compounds that make it especially famous for the treatment of cases of rheumatism, neurosis, paralysis, gout, as well as some skin affections.
These are the best known and most famous hot springs that the traveller can find among the more than forty hot springs sites that exist all over the Province of Jujuy. These hot springs are included the Yala -Termas de Reyes circuit, and offer the possibility of short walks, or tours through the cliffhanging roads which will take the traveller to the Lagunas de Yala Lakes.
Possible activities can be observation of flora and fauna, photo safaris, guided tours, walks, horseback rides and biking.
