ATTRACTIONS
In La Paz, the capital city of Bolivia, even simple and daily life is queerly wrapped by a special atmosphere. It is for that reason that to feed the pigeons of the Murillo square, -the most important in the city- or to walk by El Prado or just to look around among the unlikely knick-knacks of the handcrafts market of Las Brujas, becomes unforgettable.
Sensations get intense when traveling by the intricate stone formations of the Moon valley or the fabulous archaeological remains that evidence the importance of the men of Tiahuanaco, masters of the highland in pre-Incas times.
When visiting La Paz, these are the places to visit:
In the city:
Murillo Square: Dedicated to Don Pedro Domingo Murillo leader of the revolution of 1809, in which the scream for freedom of the citizens of La Paz was heard. In the center of the square a monument to his memory has been built. In the surroundings stands the Presidential Palace, the headquarters of Congress, and the Cathedral.
Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de La Paz: It was built in 1831 in neoclassical style. In the interior, its columns are of Corinthian style. The temple was designed by Antonio Camponovo, who divided its façade in two bodies.
Temple and Convent of San Francisco: Its centennial history is marked by tragic events that, in spite of their fateful consequences, could never dent its impressive beauty. This temple of Baroque style was first constructed in the middle of the 16th century but, in the 18th century, San Francisco had to be reconstructed because of the merciless weather.
Temple of Santo Domingo: The facade of Baroque style was worked entirely in stone in the 18th century. On the other hand, the interior, built in the 19th century, is outstanding for its neoclassical style.
Witches' market: Everything needed for the elaboration of traditional medicines, capable of curing any ailment or illness, is offered on the very old streets of Sagarnaga and Linares, in the colonial area of La Paz. Here you can also find handmade products of great quality.
