ATTRACTIONS
A continent inhabited by no one but penguins, seals, walruses, killer whales, blue whales and krill, a tiny shrimp-like crustacean. A "land" without land, eternal ice sheets where everything amazes whoever sees it. Antarctica is different and unique, a place of frozen nature, unfamiliar to man.
Travelers arriving in the Chilean Antarctic should consider visiting the following places:
- Fildes Bay
This bay hosts a great quantity of penguins and marine species. Here one can find the Port Captaincy of the Chilean Navy, Professor Julio Escudero Base of the Chilean Antarctic Institute, the Cosmic Radiation Lab (LARC) of the Chilean Air Force's Presidente Frei Base, and the residential area Villa Las Estrellas, where tourists can spend the night.
During one's stay at the bay, one can visit the penguin rockery on Ardley Peninsula (after getting a permit from the commander of the base), the "Chinese Great Wall" base (5 km from Frei base), the Russian Bellingshausen base (500 meters away) and the Uruguayan Artigas base (12 kms away)
This bay is in King George Island, in the peninsula of the same name.
- Presidente Frei Base
This base was founded in 1969 as a Meteorological Station. In 1980 the Teniente Rodolfo Marsh airport was built and in 1984 Villa Las Estrellas was completed.
It is one of the main scientific research centers and one of the main weather and navigation centers in the Antarctic.
- Villa Las Estrellas
This is the main town and the center of the scientific and tourist expeditions that are carried out here.
The "Villa" has every thing a town needs: a school, a bank and post office, a souvenir store, a chapel and a hostelry.
- Chile Bay
This bay is placed in Greenwich Island in the South Shetlands. This is where the first Chilean post on Antarctic territory, Arturo Prat Naval Base, is located and where one can visit the Comodoro Federico Guesalaga museum.
Due to its great scientific interest, one of the areas of the bay is classified as a "Specially Protected Antarctic Area" (AAEP) Nš 144; here stands the Marine Science Station, where biologists carry out oceanographic research and bird and mammal demographic control. To get to the bay from King George Island, Bransfield Straits are crossed in a Zodiac-type vessel.
