NATURE IN CHILE

PARRILLAR LAGOON FORESTRY RESERVE


Created in 1977, it is located 52 km south of the city of Punta Arenas and covers a surface of 18,414 hectares, with an altitude above sea level varying from 300 to 650 m. Among its physical characterisitics maybe mentioned Parrillar Lagoon, with a surface of 970 hectares, bordered by woods. In winter, due to the low temperatures, the rivers and lakes freeze over, especially on the banks and shores, reaching a thicknesses of up to 30 cm.
Snowdrifts in some areas are deeper than 1.7 m. The average maximum temperature is estimated at 12 Celsius, and the average minimum at -3 Celsius. Vegetation types are obviously Magellan forest (lenga), shrubbery and herbaceous vegetation. A large diversity of mammals and birds are present.
Open months: January, February, March, April, September, October, November and December.

    MAGELLAN FORESTRY RESERVE

    Created in 1932, it is sited on Brunswick Peninsula, 7.5 km west of Punta Arenas city. It possesses a surface of 19,625 hectares, and its altitude varies between 350 and 600 m.
    The geography is hilly and the soil layer is thin. Irrigation is mainly done by De Las Minas River. Annual rainfall goes from 490 to 830 mm., while medium annual temperature is 4 Celsius.
    The vegetation is of the Magellan forest class, with coihue and lenga. There is also a wide and surprising diversity of mammalian species: gray and culpeo foxes, puma, ratoncito lanoso, lauchon de pie chico; and a vast number of bird species: upland geese, bustards, jergon chico and real ducks, thrushes, chincols, meadowlarks, chercns, tiuques, black-bodied woodpeckers and pitios.
