NATURE IN CHILE

LLANQUIHUE NATIONAL RESERVE

Alacalufe Llanquihue Los Flamencos Rio Clarillo

Its area is 33,974 ha., and it extends over an Andean mountain massif, detached from the Andes Cordillera and bordered on the south by Lake Chapo, on the east by Reloncavi Estuary and on the north by the Petrohue river.

You get there from Puerto Montt, which is 40 km away by the road to Lake Chapo, and at the village of Rio Blanco taking a local country road northward to the "Guarderia" de Conaf.

The vegetation is typical of the evergreen forest, featuring species such as tepas, maios, coiges, tiacas and lumas. In the lower stratum, the quila is the prime.
Among the mammals of the area are the pumas, guias, pudus and wildcats, among others.Among the birds, we can count the upland geese, peucos, and black-throated huet huets, as well as hawks and the occasional condor.

There is an 8 km excursion trail to Calbuco Volcano that starts at the Rio Blanco (White River) "guarderia" and takes one to a rustic lodge at the foot of the volcano. From there, walking for another 15 minutes, one gains access to a lookout point.

Possible things to do:
  • Mountain climbing, which may include rocky and snowy sectors without technical climbing difficulty and only up to 5,000 meters altitude.
  • Trekking, walks that may last some days, through the mountains and wilderness, organized in stages to learn about the landscape, the fauna, the flora and the native communities of the area from a sociological point of view.
  • Flora and fauna sighting: strolls through the wilderness to admire its animals and flowers.
  • Bird Watching, their habitat, flying and behaviour.
