Curacavi is a typical village sited 47 kilometers from Santiago. It is celebrated for manufacturing sweet buns, chicha and for the proverbial warmth of its population. The area is ideal for trekking and horse riding.
Pomaire, an old Indian town, probably of Inca origin, that still keeps ancient traditions and customs, reflected in its earthenware crafts and its tasty local food, including the exquisite "empanadas pomairinas" (Pomaire meat pie).
Besides these attractions, the area has theme trails like the "cheese and wine trail" that will put you more in touch with their happy people. A few kms away lays Lake Aculeo. It is positioned 60 kms west of Santiago.
Maipu Votive Temple, dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen, patron and "General" of Chile's armies, in thanks for the decisive victory on April 5, 1818, at Maipu, during the Chilean struggle to attain its independence, More than 500,000 pilgrims come to the Votive Temple every year. It lies a little over 10 kilometers from Santiago, in Maipu municipality.
To one side of the temple lies the Del Carmen Museum, with religious art, colonial furniture and ecclesiastical documents, as well as period carriages.
Pukara de Chena is an Inca-style building from the 15th century, which was used as a defensive fortress due to its strategic placing on top of the Chena hill, that overlooks the whole Maipo river valley. It was discovered only in 1975, thanks to excavations by archaeologist Ruben Stehberg. It is at kilometer 13 of Route 5 South.
Calera de Tango, this is an architectural complex built in the Bavarian Jesuit colony around the year 1724. Formed by the Administrative House, a church and other surrounding buildings, Calera de Tango became a center for evangelization and learning or of crafts and professions such as watch-making, sculpture, engraving and goldsmith work.
A Historical Monument, it is the most important rural buildings of the central area. It is 7 kms southwest of Malloco and 15 kms southwest of Santiago.
