TRAVEL AND TOURS
Shades of modernity in the borders of a powerful and windy river; agitation and hustle in avenues, factories and commercial stores, and it is all next to the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The colourful big city is always in constant movement and gets hold of you by its febrile rhythm and seductive nights.
A warm, humid, attractive and cosmopolitan coastline, that is Guayaquil.
The city is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Guayas River, a giant and dark torrent in which big modern ships and swaying canoes sail together, as if they were taken out of a time of myths and legends.
It is not surprising to hear the drama of Guayas, a brave indigenous leader, who in his eagerness of not falling in the hands of the Spaniards, decided to kill his wife, Quil, before giving himself to the waters of the river. His name was joined to the river. A city not yet built was baptized.
That happened a long time ago, now the scene is different: the metallic beats of the factories and refineries, the sirens of the boats that anchor in the port and the din of the recording boxes of their commercial and financial centres have turned
Guayaquil, in the economic heart of the country and in the most populated city of Ecuador.
Modernity is not the only face of
Guayaquil. There is another calm and bucolic semblance that lives in the squares, the museums, and the old Barrio de Las Peņas, with paved streets and wooden houses. You can be sure that the town of Guayas will never stop surprising you.
