PUERTO PIRAMIDES
FAUNA
Puerto Pirámides's main attraction is, obviously, the presence of whales from June to December every year. During that period there are several entrepreneurs actively working in the village on shipboard sightings of whales. Whales may be seen from a ship or from both the coast and the cliffs.
On the reserve, there is a sea lion colony of around 1,500 animals almost 680 pups born every season.
There is also a nesting colony of seagulls with some 330 nests in their mating season, plus some 40 nests of rock cormorants. Sporadically a mating colony of terns is also formed.
Pirámides is also a good place to watch land birds: Patagonian mockingbirds, finches, rufous-collared sparrows and tinamous.
FLORA
The vegetation around Puerto Pirámides is a bushy steppe holding mainly Senecio filaginoides and Mulinum spinosum.
The coverage of the bush layer is about 35% and it is formed by two sub-layers. One is of Mulinum spinosum and Senecio filaginoides, with an average height of 70 cm and the other is of Lycium chilense and Schinus polygamus, with an average height of 1.1 m.
