Birds of astonishing feathers, flying together in a clear, peaceful sky, cawing persistently are expecting your attention. They stretch their wings and head towards the choppy sea, the exuberant labyrinth of the green Amazon or, per chance, to the unmannered heights of a mountain range with no notion of hospitality whatsoever.
The paradise beauty of the Andean geography, allows for quiet bird watching as birds nest in the dense Amazon, or on the banks of noisy peaceful rivers, or in the heights of the mountains, where the majestic flight of the Condor (Vultur gryphus) reigns supreme as an emblematic bird.
Ornithologists have registered, in Peru alone, more than 1,800 species of bird, which represent 18.5% of all bird species on earth and 45% of the tropical species. In the Biosphere Reserve of Manu, in the Madre de Dios department, around 1,000 colorful species fly, most notably the "rock hen" or "tunqui" (Rupicola peruviana), which bears without shame the pompous title of "National Bird of Peru" .
The most important tourist destination of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, have up to 58 sea and land bird species, with 28 or those being stable residents to the islands, while the rest are migratory.
But that isn't all one can discover and cherish in Andean lands. Bolivia takes fifth place regarding the largest variety of bird species. Here you can see the largest flamingos in the world, called "parina grande" , over one m high. These birds are notable for their distinctive colours and beauty, as they are both delicate and imposing. Their wings caress the clouds in a perfect display of harmony and beauty which has never failed to capture people's fancies.
