The National Reserve of Pampa Galeras has been decreed on May 5, 1967 with Law (R.S.) N 157-A. Afterwards, its name was changed to National Reserve of Pampa Galeras Barbara D'Achille on April 15, 1993 by law (D.S.) N 017-93-PCM. This reserve is made up by 6500 has owned by the peasant community of Lucanas located in the department of Ayacucho, province and district of Lucanas.

This weedy area is made up of Festuca tree (Stipa ichu, Calamagrostis sp)., the Tola (Lepidophyllum quadrangulare) and the Senecio sp. and the quishuar (Buddleja sp.)

The vicuna (Vicugna vicugna) is the most representative animal in Pampa Galeras and the main purpose of this reserve is to protect these animals that produce the finest wool. We can also find the Guanaco (Lama guanicoe), which lives free in the pampas.

The most imposing bird is the Andean Condor (Vultor gryphus) We can also see the pissaca (Nothoprocta ornata) and the Kiula (Tinamotis penhaldii). With regard to aquatic birds, we can find the pato jerga (Anas georgica) and the pato sutro (Anas flavirosatris). The main purpose of this Reserve is to protect the vicuna and, through it, to promote the development and well-being of the residents of the area.
