This Reserved area was established in 1990, through Law (R.M.) N 0032-90-AG/DGFF. It is positioned in the departments of Madre de Dios (Province of Tambopata) and Puno (Provinces of Carabaya and Sandia) and it has an area of 1 043 998 02 has. Together with the National Park of Manu, they are the two most studied areas on the Peruvian Amazon. With 575 types of birds, 1,200 types of butterflies, 103 types of dragonflies and 135 types of ants recorded in their area. Likewise, there are 103 types of mammals 60 types of amphibious, 67 types of reptiles (among the patient visitor can count snakes, turtles, crocodiles and lizards) and 94 types of fishes.

We can also find animal that are in menace of extinction such as the giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), the bush dog (Speothos venaticus), the black caiman (Melanosuchus niger) and the harpy eagle (Harpiya harpiyja).

Among the main purposes of this reserved area are the preservation of the wild flora and fauna, as well as the protection, conservation and preservation of the natural resources. Another goal is to protect lands in danger of erosion in order to make sure they will keep producing food; to reach this goal it is necessary to follow three steps: 1) Maintain the ecological processes that are at work; 2) Preserve the variety of flora and fauna and 3) Keep and use the resources as to assure their continuous use.
