These rainforests have been established in order to guard the high basins, the banks of the rivers and other waterways and, in general, to keep fragile lands from contamination. Nowadays there are six protected forests that cover 389 986.99 has which represent 0,3% of the national territory.




THE PROTECTED FOREST OF ALTO MAYO

This area was given this status on July 23, 1987, through Law (R.S.) N 0293-87-AG/DGFF. It is positioned in the provinces of Rioja and Moyobamba, districts of Yorongos, Rioja, Elas, Sopln Vargas, Nuevo Cajamarca, Pardo Miguel and Moyobamba. It consists of a surface of 182,000 has,The focal purposes of this scheme are to preserve the lands and keep the provision of running and agricultural water for the valley of Alto Mayo. Finally, to preserve the wild fauna such as the choringo monkey with yellow tail (Logothrix flavicauda), the little rock rooster (Rupicola peruviana) and the guachoro (Steatornis caripensis) as well as different types of types of magnificent orchids.

IMPERIAL NEW CHANNEL

On May 19, 1980, through Law (R.S.) N 0007-80-AA-DGFF it was established in the department of Lima, province of Caete, district of Nuevo Imperial and protecting 18,11 hectares with the main purpose of preserving the water of River Caete in order to assure the amount needed for agricultural purposes as it provides vegetables to the city of Lima.

    This area was declared to be protected on June 19, 1987 through Law (R.S.) N 0222-87-AG/DGFF. It is placed in the department of Cajamarca, province of Chota, district of Querocoto, with 2078,38 has.The key goals of the project are to keep the provision of clean running water for the districts of Querocoto, Llama, Huambo, while preserving its lands and protecting its forest.




    THE PROTECTED FOREST OF THE PUIPUI

    This forest was established on January 31, 1985 through Law (R.S.) N 0042-85-AG/DGFF, and it is located in the department of Junn, provinces of Chanchamayo, Jauja, Concepcin and Satipo districts of Vitoc, Chanchamayo, Prehanaki, Pampa Hermosa, Comas y Monobamba. Has a surface of 60,000 has.The major goals of the protectorate are to protect the hydrological basin of the rivers Tulumayo, Pichanaki and Ipoki as to assure the provision of clean water for agricultural purposes and for the needs of the bordering cities.




    THE PROTECTED FOREST OF PUQUIO SANTA ROSA

    This area was established on September 2, 1892, through Law (R.S.) N 0434-82-AG/DGFF. Located in the department of La Libertad, province of Trujillo, district of Vir, it has a surface of 72,50 has. The main goals of this area are, first of all, to provide water coming from the Puquio Santa Rosa for agricultural purposes and to preserve the forest in the area as an essential factor in its hydrological cycle.




    THE PROTECTED FOREST OF SAN MATIAS - SAN CARLOS

    This area was established on March 20, 1987, through Law (R.S.) N 0101-87-AG/DGFF. Located in the department of Pasco, province of Oxapampa, district of Huancabamba, Puerto Bermudez and Villa Rica. It covers 145 818 has. The chief purposes of protecting the lands and forest of San Carlos are the defense of agricultural lands the promotion of economic activities which could benefit diverse natives communities such as Campas, Ashaninkas and Amueshas.
