PUERTO MALDONADO - TAMBOPATA
TRAVEL AND TOURSThe canoe pushes through the fog, as if to tear it apart and cut a path for the hesitant rays of the sun unable to find an opening in the thick, hazy, almost impenetrable veil. The mist seems to shroud everything in a dawn of diffused lines and shades, in which twisted trunks and mud paths are sensed rather than seen. But a persistent breeze little by little blows the fog of the unhurried dawn away. The shadows vanish and no longer is anything sensed. The forest is made visible, a majestic, amazing green labyrinth… and an ocelot, silent, intrepid, wise, slips away from those audacious men that travel the Madre de Dios river, a paradise full of biodiversity in the southeast of Peru. This is an exuberant and forceful land that has not yet been punished by the destructive claws of civilization. The jungle is fierce and intricate, warm and oppressive, but rich in life. In this area of the Amazon - El Dorado when mythologized by the Spanish conquerors - the greatest variety of animal and plant species on the planet coexist in perfect harmony. There are three conservation areas in Madre de Dios of great importance: the Manu Biosphere Reserve, made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987, the Tambopata - Candamo Reserve, with unharmed populations of several endangered species, such as the giant river otter and the Harpy eagle, and the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, home to some 450 species of birds. Madre de Dios can only be depicted as a marvel of nature: A world of enormous trees, potent rivers and thick fog, in which man is an outsider, a strange being disturbed by the whispers of the inhabitants of the jungle as he walks its tortuous trails. Here silence doesn't exist and anything could happen. ![]() ATTRACTIONSWalking in the forest, navigating a river, listening to those "voices" of the animals hidden in the forest, seeing the red eyes of a caiman shining in the darkness or the blinding plumage of a bird flying on the surface of a lagoon, everything brings their own sense of adventure and emotion. In Madre de Dios, the traveller has plenty opportunities to know some of the most beautiful corners of the Amazon Rainforest. Your voyage in this green forest begins in the small city of Puerto Maldonado - Tambopata, the department's capital, famous for its imposing sunsets. In the city Founded at the end of the 19th century, Puerto Maldonado - Tambopata is known as the "Capital of Biodiversity." reserved, hot and small, this Amazon city is situated between the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers. Its most important attractions are Lake Sandoval, a small paradise just 8 kilometers from the city; and Lake Valencia, 60 kilometers away, where you can fish "the golden one" ("El Dorado") or the "Maiden" ("La Doncella"). There is also a town called Laberinto ("Labyrinth") which, as its name suggests, is chaotic and disordered.
